Imphal, May 17 2022:
The government's 'War on Drugs' campaign will not reap the desired fruit unless the drug peddlers, poppy cultivators and owners of seized drug are identified and punished according to law of the land, said All Manipur Nupi Marup, secretary L Sumatibala.
In a release, Sumatibala noted that despite launch of 'war on drugs' mission by chief minister NN Biren in 2019, there has been reports of seizures of psychotropic substances such as heroin, opium, brown sugar almost every day from different parts of the state.
After six years since launch of the campaign it seems there isn't much success in combating drug trafficking in the state, the secretary said and pointed out arrest of drug peddlers from the state in different parts of the country is living proof that drug lords still remain at large.
Thus, unless the real owners of the seized drug consignments and investors of illicit drug trafficking are identified and punished the government's campaign won't make much of a difference, she reiterated.
L Sumatibala, however, welcomed decisions of different communities in the hills not to allow poppy plantation in their respective areas.
