Drivers condemn assault by police, demand suspension

Condemning in strongest term the assault on a truck driver by Noney police on Thursday night, Manipur Drivers' Association (MDA) has demanded suspension of the police personnel involved while cautioning of launching steering off strike in case of failing to do so.
According to MDA general secretary Sanjay, around 8 pm on Thursday, the truck driver Guldeep Singh (65) from Punjab was on his way from Silchar along NH 37, when his co-driver Harban Singh went inside the police check post to register entry of the truck.
A couple of police personnel asked Guldeep Singh to move the truck ahead a little.
As Guldeep told the police that the key was with Harban Singh, who went inside the check post, the police personnel assaulted them for no apparent reason.
He suffered, injuries on his shoulder and other parts of his body.
He was provided first aid at Khumbong PHC.
Demanding the government to take up appropriate actions and suspend the police personnel involved in the assault within five days, Sanjay warned of ceasing service from the next day onwards'on both national highways leading to the state in case of failing to suspend the involved police personnel.
