Imphal, August 05 2024:
The Indian Army marked Indian Organ Donation Day 2024 with a comprehensive awareness campaign at Leimakhong Military Station on Saturday.
The event, aimed at educating troops on the significance of organ donation, featured a lecture by an Army doctor who emphasised the life-saving potential of organ donation.
According to a statement issued by PRO Defence, the lecture provided attendees with detailed information on the procedures for registering as an organ donor, the benefits of organ donation, and the legal aspects associated with it.
The significance of August 3, observed as Indian Organ Donation Day, was highlighted, during the session.
This day commemorates the first deceased donor organ transplant in India, which was also the first heart transplant conducted after the promulgation of "The Transplantation of Human Organs Act" on July 8, 1994 .
Participants learned that a single donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and improve the quality of life for 75 others through tissue donation, making a lasting impact even in death.
Following the lecture, a pledge-taking ceremony was held, where participants committed to organ donation.
Real-time registration was also facilitated for those willing to become organ donors, the statement added.
