Imphal, August 09 2022:
As did in other parts of the country, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) remembered the Quit India Movement on its 80th anniversary on Tuesday.
To a query raised by media persons regarding the ongoing economic blockade on the sideline of the observance function, MPCC president K Meghachandra said that it would be better for ATSUM to launch other democratic forms of agitation rather than imposing economic blockade for pressing their demands to the government as blockade affects every community settling in the state, more particularly the poor people.
He also strongly called for settling all issues by holding dialogues instead of launching bandh/ blockade and said that the government should also stop giving false commitment but rather work towards preventing bandh/blockade with sincerity.
Earlier, Meghachandra led party leaders and workers in taking oath to protect and promote freedom and integrity of India and to safeguard the Constitution without any differentiation on the basis of caste and religion and not to indulge in any violence.
He also led party leaders and workers in paying rich floral tributes to portraits of Quit India Movement leader Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters.
Congress legislature party leader O Ibobi Singh, who also took part in the observance, said that the 80th anniversary of Quit India Movement is being observed to remember great leaders of the country like Congress leader Mahatma Gandhi and others who forced the mighty British out of India without any violence.
Observance of the 80th anniversary of Quit India Movement is more significant with the completion of 75th year of India's Independence, he said, adding that Quit India Movement was a significant movement towards attaining India's freedom.
He also recalled that Bombay meet of All India Congress Committee on August 9, 1942 resolved to launch an intense movement against the British to quit India and it was a big step towards attaining India's freedom.
The observance function was also attended by AICC CWC member Gaikhangam, deputy CLP leader K Ranjit, ex-MLAs and Congress workers.
