Imphal, October 31 2024:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) on Thursday organised an awareness programme on 'Emergency Stroke Management' at Shija Hospital, emphasising the importance of rapid response to stroke care.
In a release, SHRI informed that over 40 participants attended the event from Medilane Healthtech; JCRE Meds, LifeCare, and Life Saver Ambulance Service, with Shija Hospitals consultant neurologist Dr Rahul Oinam as the resource person.
The programme was aimed at enhancing the ability of ambulance teams to recognise and respond swiftly to stroke symptoms, a crucial skill in managing one of the world's leading causes of death and long-term disability.
Dr Rahul covered essential stroke identification techniques, focusing on symptoms such as sudden confusion, numbness, and speech difficulties, while underscoring the critical 'golden hour' for stroke care.
He emphasised the necessity of swift transport to a stroke - ready hospital within 4.5 hours for optimal recovery.
Additionally, he highlighted the BE FAST acronym-Balance (sudden loss of coordination), Eyes (sudden vision changes), Face (facial drooping), Arms (weakness in one arm), Speech (slurred speech), and Time (the urgency to call emergency services) - as a crucial tool for recognising stroke symptoms promptly.
The release further informed that in a coordinated effort, Shija Hospital organised similar programmes at SHAIBO Hospital in Khurai and Shija Hospital, Langol.
The session at SHAIBO was conducted by medical officer-in-charge Dr Kangujam Baby Chanu, while consultant emergency physician Dr Sulochana Darjee facilitated the programme at Shija Hospital.
