As done every year, the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) organized a seminar on free legal aid services on the occasion of the Legal Services Day at the Uripok Cheirap Court today.
Attending as chief guest, Justice H Kaminikumar who is also the executive chairman of the MASLSA outlined in brief how the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987 came into force on November 9, 1995.He also stressed the need for spreading awareness on free legal aid amongst the weaker sections of the society.
In his presidential speech, senior advocate Ch Nodiachand stated that the best verdict is the verdict agreed by both parties.
He urged the lawyers to take keen interest in spreading awareness on free legal services to the common people.
A Sukumar, member secretary MASLSA said that under the scheme of the Legal Services Authority Act, many Lok Adalats were held in which 734 cases were disposed so far.
23 legal literacy and legal awareness camps were also organized in the rural, sub urban and hill areas of the State.
MASLSA also provided legal aid services to the poor and needy people, he added.
Sukumar further said that on November 5 last, the association also set up one counselling and conciliation centre consisting of a team of advocates and social workers known as counselling and conciliation group at the office of the Imphal West District Legal Services Authority.
Counselling and conciliation group rendering legal advice will be available from 1 pm to 4 pm on the 1st and last Saturdays of every month, he added.
