Imphal, December 29 2021:
Founder president of Nupi Samaj Th Ramani has urged all candidates of the 2022 Assembly elections to take a concrete resolution to remove Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) 1958fromManipur if they truly love the State.
Addressing the 41st foundation day of Meira Paibi at Kanto Sabal Leikai Community Hall, Ramani said Nisha bandh/Meira Paibi was established as cases of women harassment by male counterparts under the influence of intoxicants rose to a new high in 1972-73 .
Saying that AFSPA was then imposed a few years later in Manipur on the pretext of checking insurgencies, she claimed that the security forces have been harassing people since then as they enjoy impunity under the Act.
Asking why the Government is imposing this outdated Act which is infamous for violating human rights, she regretted that no legislators from Manipur have so far stood firmly against the 'draconian Act'.
AMKIL president in charge Lourembam Nganbi, Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup president Y Momon Leima, Nupi Samaj, Churachandpur branch president Gurumayum Landhoni, Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup president Y Memma, Leimakhong Area Development Committee president RK Bimola and Khurkhul GP Pradhan Irungbam Santa Singh also attended the observance.
The gatherings also offered floral tribute to the portraits of pioneers of the Meira Paibi movement - Pebam Chaobi Devi, Ningombam Momon and Khomdram Indumani.
