Imphal, May 29 2024:
Vehicular movement which was halted after Irang bailey bridge snapped yesterday has resumed today, said sources.
The vehicles, including petroleum tankers are now using an RCC bridge over Irang river.
Before it was opened to the vehicles today, the construction of the bridge was almost completed with all that was required was to fill earth on both ends of the bridge.
Sources said the NHIDCL made the bridge operational within 10 hours of the collapse of the bailey bridge.
Locals and PMU Noney have lauded the Executive Director of NHIDCL, Virendra Kumar for the swift action.
When the vehicles are able to cross the RCC bridge today, it was earlier reported that the locals were against movement of heavy vehicles on it, suspectedly because of a land compensation issue that has not been resolved.
Notably, the bailey bridge over Irang river on Imphal-Jiribam road collapsed yesterday amid incessant rainfall that caused widespread flood across the State.
With the bridge snapped, many vehicles including petroleum tankers were left stranded.
The only available alternative route for the vehicles then was to take a diversion from Rengpang and proceed towards Joujangtek and take Bishnupur-Nungba road to reach Imphal.
The transporters, however, had urged authorities concerned to make the RCC bridge functional urgently.
While vehicles are able to cross the Irang river, a portion of the road that sank in the Kotlen area yesterday has left vehicles stranded.
The transporters, however, have expressed that they can be repaired quickly to resume traffic.
The flow of traffic including heavy vehicles along Imphal-Jiribam is expected to fully resume tomorrow.
On the other hand, minor landslides have occurred in several locations along Imphal-Dimapur road, but the Senapati district administration and NHIDCL officials are engaging in clearing the road for maintaining the flow of traffic, said sources.
Amid the incessant rainfall today, flight operations continued normal at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, Imphal.
Airport officials said flights were suspended on Monday due to cyclone Remal, but normal operation has resumed.
