Imphal, April 28 2015 :
Volunteers of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) today staged a 30-minute protest at Keishampat junction against the bandh culture prevalent in the State.
Speaking to reporters on the sideline of the protest, DESAM president M Angamba said that the demonstration was held in protest against the frequent bandhs and blockades clamped by different organisations.
From January to April this year, different bandhs, general strikes and blockades have occupied more than 30 days, he said.
Angamba further said that many of these bandhs were called in a hurry without considering the possible inconvenience which may be caused to the general public.
As such, these bandhs had not served any purpose but disturbed the academic atmosphere of different educational institutes and caused inconvenience to the general public, Angamba said.
It is not right to rely only on bandh and blockade to fulfil any demand, Angamba said and added that it is now high time to switch to other forms of agitation.
Maintaining that frequent bandhs and blockades largely hamper economic growth of the State, Angamba said that it is illogical to impose a bandh, which may affect the whole population of the State, to fulfil the demands of a few people.
As such, the State Government must take up stringent measures to check these frequent bandhs.
