8 Scrub Typhus cases detected at Ukhrul village

Imphal, January 24 2020:
In the aftermath of the death of a four year old kid and a woman, eight cases of Scrub Typhus have been detected at Khamasom Phungthar, Ukhrul district.
Following reports of the death of the two persons due to unknown diseases, a team of the State Health Department from Imphal and a medical team from Ukhrul went to Khamasom Phungthar and collected blood samples of the villagers.

The medical team which went to the village has reported to the Health Department that heart attack would be the cause of death for the four year old kid while a ruptured appendix might be the possible cause of death for the woman .
It has also been reported that Scrub Typhus has nothing to do with the death of the child and the woman.
Nonetheless, out of blood samples collected from four villagers on January 22, one was tested positive for Scrub Typhus.
Subsequently, the blood samples have been sent to RIMS for further tests, informed a source.
The medical team which is currently stationed at Khamasom Phungthar collected blood samples from some other people yesterday and blood samples of seven people tested positive for Scrub Typhus, said the source.
There is a report of people infected by Scrub Typhus at the same village last year.
Meanwhile, the Health Department has conducted a medical camp at the village.
(Scrub Typhus, also known as Bush Typhus, is a disease caused by a bacteria called Orientia Tsutsugamushi.
Scrub Typhus is spread to people through bites of infected chiggers (larval mites) .
The most common symptoms of Scrub Typhus include fever, headache, body aches, and sometimes rash.
Most cases of Scrub Typhus occur in rural areas of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, China, Japan, India, and northern Australia.
Anyone living in or traveling to areas where Scrub Typhus is found could get infected.
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of Scrub Typhus usually begin within 10 days of being bitten.
Signs and symptoms may include: Fever and chills, Headache, Body aches and muscle pain.
A dark, scab-like region at the site of the chigger bite (also known as eschar) Mental changes, ranging from confusion to coma, Enlarged lymph nodes, Rash) .
