MSF gears up for 'Martyrdom Day'

The 20th Students' Martyrdom Day 2024 commemorating Athouba Pebam Chittaranjan's sacrifice will be observed on August 16, said Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) .
Born on September 8, 1973, Pebam Chittaranjan was a student leader who led several movements against the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 .
In a bid to immolate himself for the cause, he set himself on fire on August 15, 2004 and died the next day-August 16, 2004 .
Pebam Chittaranjan hailed from Takhellambam Leikai, Imphal West.
Commemorating his life and the supreme sacrifice he made, MSF has been observing Students' Martyrdom Day every year on August 16 .
This year, the "20th Students' Martyrdom Day 2024 to Excel Right to Life" will be observed on August 16, said MSF.
The observance will begin with the presentation of "Yakairol" at 6 am (August 16) at the MSF's head office at Kwakeithel.
However, considering the situation in Manipur, only the rituals that are absolutely necessary will be observed, it said.
The main observance will be held at Kyamba Ningshing Shanglen at Bishnupur from 10.30 am.
Students and people attending the event will pay floral tribute to the statue of Pebam Chittaranjan at the Students' Martyrdom Complex.
Later, the attendees will visit Bishnupur Bazar where Pebam Chittaranjan immolated himself and pay floral tribute to his photo.
This will be followed by a public meeting at Kyamba Ningshing Shanglen, Bishnupur, said MSF.
It urged people for monetary and material assistance, and appealed to every household to lit a "Meira" in the evening on August 16 .
The Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) urged all students and people to join the observance on the day and pay respect to Pebam Chittaranjan for the supreme sacrifice he made for the people.
