Imphal, July 18 2022:
Chiru Union, North East India and Sadu Chiru village authority have jointly informed that resolution has been adopted in an emergency to keep the Sadu Chiru waterfall open on Sundays for visiting tourists with certain restrictions like no business operators at the tourist site.
A release jointly issued by Chiru Union, NEI and SaduChiru village authority pointed out that the task of maintenance, security and overall enhancement was entrusted to a local non-registered body namely SaduChiru Waterfall Management Committee under the aegis of SaduChiru village authority which charges nominal entry and parking fee.
It was opened on all days to the public despite baseless allegations of holding or arbitrarily acting based on our Christian faith, the joint release said, while adding that in 2019, many cases of sale of liquor and drug were detected on Sundays when there was an unprecedented surge in the number of visitors.
Despite several warnings, some repeatedly continued the evil practice and hence, they had to resort to destruction of the sheds and ban individuals concerned.
With the easing of lockdown rules by the government, it was deliberated upon to ensure that the site is cleaned,
maintained and disinfected on Sundays so as to control the sale of illicit substances as well, it clarified, while adding that the general consensus on profits versus public order is weighted to ensure the health of the waterfalls and its upkeep despite losing a day's business on Sundays.
However, it is noticed that many eager tourists, students, etc., are at times left disappointed of missing the
opportunity of visiting the spot on Sunday.
As such, an emergency meeting was convened and resolved to keep the waterfall open on Sundays for visiting tourists on a restricted basis, the joint release added.
