Imphal, May 15, 2013:
The United Naga Council (UNC) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention on eviction of houses at Naga River colony.
The memorandum said that Naga River village is a small locality resided by people of different ethnic communities, majority of whom are tribal Nagas.
It added that there has been intervention from the Gauhati High Court to maintain status quo with the last two verdicts being issued on April 2, 2013 and April 18, 2013. Moreover, there is also a standing directive from the Supreme Court as well, the memorandum added.
It also mentioned the land policy of the State Government that says, "Government shall permit liberally the transfer of waste, uncultivable and barren lands to the entrepreneurs for setting up tourism complex approved by a competent authority whenever necessary even Government lands not use for a long time may be leased out through tourism department for big project of tourism under the terms and conditions agreed upon by the Government and the entrepreneur'.
The memorandum also questioned why the State Government is so serious to evict the residential area which has three churches although MPSC building is located nearby.
The memorandum sought intervention from the Prime Minister before the situation turns out of control.
It added that in view of the prevailing situation including lawlessness in the State, the only way out for minority tribal and Nagas in particular is to extend political alternative management outside the Government of Manipur at the earliest.
The memorandum also alleged that the State Cabinet had taken a one sided decision on May 5, 2013 in the interest of Seijang village in connection with the burning down of 36 houses of Sailent village by the villagers of Seijang.
