Imphal, September 14 2022:
Police clashed with locals of Chingmeirong Mamang Awang Leikai today while trying to evict local establishments including club building and Meira Shanglen as per directives of Manipur High Court.
Two locals were also reportedly hurt as police fired tear gas to disperse the public.
Speaking to the media, secretary of Chingmeirong Mamang Awang Leikai Singlup Kh Thangamba alleged that some people were trying to take over public land with forged documents and added that the public is prepared to take the matter to the Supreme Court if needed.
Thangamba added that it was very unfortunate that someone from Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai who has never stayed in the area has laid claim on the local ground and has land records in their name.
The same people had tried to evict the local establishments from the public ground in 2019 but failed with public standing against it, he added.
The locals are prepared to protect the office of Chingmeirong Youth Welfare Association, Ima Panthoibi Meira Paibi Nupi Lup's Shanglen and UJB School, he told the media.
Meanwhile, Counsel of the petitioner said it was very unfortunate that locals of the area and even MLA of Wangkhei AC Th Arunkumar were standing against an order of the Chief Justice of Manipur Court.
If even the order of Chief Justice is not followed, then it is clear that there is no 'Rule of Law' in the State, she added.
Adding that the case regarding the eviction the 0.06 acres of land in Chingmeirong Mamang Awang Leikai had been with the Court since 1972 and that the Court had passed ruling in favour of the petitioner in 2019, the Counsel appealed the public to follow the order of the High Court of Manipur.
