State Handloom Day celebrated

The 22nd State Handloom Day celebration was held at Crafts Complex at Patsoi Part-I today organised by Handlooms Promotion Council, Manipur.
Assistant Director of Weavers Service Centre Imphal, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India, Moirangthem Ibohal Singh, National Awardee Kshetrimayum Indira and Officer on Special Duty, Manipur Textile Processing Institute, Directorate of Handloom & Textiles, K Kumarjit Singh graced the event as the presidium members.
On this occasion, as a mark of honour and motivation, monetary aids was extended to 5 selected weavers and presented them gifts.
Speaking on the occasion, Chingtam Luwang, chief functionary of Handlooms Promotion Council stated that Manipur has been celebrating State Handloom Day every year on August 1 since 2000 however after the BJP Government led by Narendra Modi came into power, August 7 has been celebrated as National Handloom Day from 2015.Now Handloom Day has been celebrated twice which is really unfortunate, he added.
He continued that the State Handloom Day is being observed today as the same could not be celebrated on August 1 in view of the situation of COVID-19 pandemic and due to the curfew and restrictions imposed by the State.
Expressing concern on the observance of Handloom Day twice, he stated that an appeal will be made at the Supreme Court to change the name of Handloom Day which is observed at the national level.
He further maintained that Manipur was the first to observe Handloom day in the world and the Council will take up measures to observe August 1 every year as the Handloom Day worldwide to instill the importance of handloom in the society.
