Imphal, July 13 2021:
Minister of Water Resources and Youth Affairs and Sports, Letpao Haokip laid the foundation stone of an Eco-Tourism Destination at Lonpinu Gamvet Mol, Lonpi village in Chandel district on July 11 afternoon.
To be set up at a total cost of Rs 50 lakh, the project is jointly sponsored by Letpao, who is the local MLA of the area, and the Department of Tourism.
Speaking at the small occasion, the Minister said that the destination has a very scenic view, has a beautiful hill climb experience till its top and offers a 360degree aerial view of the various sides of Manipur including Churachandpur, Ukhrul, the central plains, and also Myanmar side.
But what is more interesting is the historical significance the place has during the time of the Seven Years Devastation War, he said.
As stated by the Minister, the then Manipuri King Gambhir Singh came up to this hill during the war, and along with the village chief of Lonpi, declared that the Manipuri territory will be till what the eyes could see towards Burma from that hill.
As a result of this, the hill is also known as 'Lamyeng Ching', he added.
The new tourist destination at Lonpi, also called Monpi, will have four lodging houses and one long dormitory to cater to the needs of the visitors and for allowing night stay facilities.
The destination will be handled on PPP model.
