Imphal, December 12 2016: Manipuris though small in number were known for their valour and they could fight unto death for truth and this was exemplified by the Nupi Lans of 1904 and 1939, asserted Chief Minister O Ibobi.

He was speaking as chief guest at the 77th Nupi Lan anniversary held today at Nupi Lan Memorial Complex here where Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam was also seated on the dais as functional president.

The present generation can never overlook the heroic struggles of Manipuri women against British colonial rulers, said the Chief Minister.

"We must salute all those brave mothers who fought without any arms against injustice done to the people of Manipur by British colonial rulers", Ibobi stated.

Manipur is now a full fledged State and there is a democratically elected Government.

The best option to raise a demand or resolve an issue is through dialogue, without resorting to any form of violence, continued the Chief Minister.

He also expressed keen desire to resolve all outstanding issues through dialogue rather than raising impractical or impossible demands which only bred untold misery to the public.

He also appealed to all the people to follow the footsteps of those brave mothers of Nupi Lan era in order to bring uniform development, peace, stability, harmony and unity in the State.

In his speech, Gaikhangam remarked that Manipuri women have been taking pro-active roles in trade and commerce activities, domestic works, grooming children and many other socio-economic and political issues.

The historic Nupi Lans signified Manipuri people's stiff opposition to repressive and exploitative measures of feudalism and colonialism.

"It is the bounden duty of all us to pay deep respects to all those brave, selfless mothers and follow their footsteps", Gaikhangam exhorted.

He also expressed keen desire to observe the Nupi Lan anniversary in a grander and more elaborate manner.

Later, Khongjom War Memorial Society's play Nupi Lan was also staged.

Led by Chief Minister O Ibobi, Ministers, MLAs, high ranking officials and students paid floral tributes to the Nupi Lan statue.

Students of Shree Shree Bal Vidya Mukunda Dev Government Music College also presented a song eulogising the historic Nupi Lan.

The 77th anniversary of Nupi Lan was also observed at Gouranagar Sanskrit Ved Vidyalaya, Hojai district Assam under the aegis of the All Assam Apunba Meira Paibi Lup (AAAMPL), Hojai district committee.

Offering of floral tributes to the Nupi Lan patriots was the main feature of the commemorative function.

Hojai AC MLA Shiladitya Dev and AAAMPL Hojai district committee president Thokchom Thoibi Devi graced the function as chief guest and president respectively.
