Imphal, August 11 2022:
The counter blockade imposed by 14 organisations from August 8 onwards in response to the agitation of All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) has been suspended as the latter officially announced suspension of its economic blockade last night.
A press release issued by the Kangleipak Kanba Lup with the name of 13 other organisations attached, however, stated that the 14 organisations have unanimously resolved to launch a counter blockade whenever an economic blockade is imposed in future.
Appealing all to refrain from imposing economic blockades while placing their demands before the Govt, the KKL stated that the recent economic blockade by ATSUM over the issue of non tabling a certain Bill and the arrest of its five leaders was unlawful as it affected lakhs of people.
Claiming that imposition of an economic blockade has become a regular occurrence in Manipur, KKL stated that there was an instance of even blocking the lifeline of Manipur for a record 142 days in the past.
The KKL also opined that frequent imposition of economic blockade is one major reason why majority of the people in Manipur live in poverty.
Saying that the Government randomly released those who called economic blockades without analysing the harm done by the extreme manoeuvre to the people and the State at large, KKL claimed that imposing an economic blockade impedes the revenue collection and the socio economic condition of the State greatly.
"Who will compensate for the losses brought by the economic blockades," it asked.
