Imphal, February 11 2025:
A sit-in protest was staged by the people of Moirangkampu at Khewa Bazar today, condemning the killing of Laishram Malemnganba.
The protest demonstrated the community's outrage against the tragic incident as the people resolved to not claim the body until the assailants are penalised.
Laishram Malemnganba was tragically shot dead by unknown armed miscreants at Moirangkampu yesterday.
Speaking to the media at the site of the protest, Waikhom Anand, convenor of the "JAC against the brutal killing of Laishram Malemnganba", said that Malemnganba, a 14-year-old Class VII student and son of L Ibomcha from Moirangkampu Awang Leikai, was brutally killed by unknown armed miscreants in broad daylight.
Malemnganba was deceived into leaving his house by a phone call at around 12.10 pm claiming that a parcel was arriving for him, he said.
He also said that Malemnganba was told to pick up the parcel from Porompat crossing.
Saying that the boy was shot dead just four or five houses away from his residence when he was going out to pick up the parcel, Anand added that the assailants also tried to kill Malemnganba's friend but he managed to escape unhurt.
Further stating the assailants dropped one mobile phone and the same has been handed over to police, he added that the assailants, however, escaped with Malemnganba's phone.
Urging the authorities to arrest the assailants within 24 hours as some clues are in hand, Anand said that the body won't be claimed until the assailants are penalised.
He also urged all the armed groups to issue a clarification regarding the killing of Malemnganba.
Saying that another boy was killed from a nearby area amid the crisis in Manipur by placing different charges on him, Anand asked if the responsible group or individuals are also going to justify the brutal killing of Malemnganba.
It's a disturbing trend where lives are being taken, and then attempts are made to legitimize the violence by placing false charges on the victims, he said.
He also said that the surge in senseless killings has spawned a climate of dread and anxiety, leaving people on edge.
Tomorrow could be anyone's turn, Anand added.
