Scribes denounce burning newsprint by KNF

Imphal, August 10 2024: Denoun-cing the burning of newsprint worth lakhs by suspected members of KNF (Kuki National Front) at Kang-pokpi's Motbung on August 7, journalists ceased work and staged a sit-in protest at the premises of the Manipur Press Club, Imphal yesterday.

Spearheaded by the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM), the protest demonstration demanded swift action against the suspected KNF cadres involved in the incident.

During the protest demonstration, AMWJU vice president Raj Nongthombam said the cease work demonstration was organised to register strong condemnation of the attack on media.

Newsprint and other printing materials worth lakhs being transported from Guwahati were burnt and destroyed by unknown armed persons at Kangpok-pi in broad daylight on August 7.This attack on the media is an attack on the freedom of speech and expression and democracy, he said.

The attack in broad daylight has exposed the failure of the administration, police and Central security forces.

This clearly indicates that the security forces are unable to protect and secure the National Highway, he added.

The journalists demanded swift action from the Government and urged its agencies concerned to book the culprits at the earliest.

AMWJU and EGM have submitted a representation each to the Governor, Chief Minister, Information Minister, Security Advisor and Director General of Police (DGP) on the incident.
