2330 litres of country liquor disposed

Altogether 2330 litres of country made liquor seized from different places were disposed off today at Excise Headquarters, Lamphelpat by setting them ablaze.
Speaking to media persons, Excise Assistant Commissioner K Joykumar said that out of the total quantity of liquor disposed off today, 1600 litres were brewed in Sekmai and they were being taken towards Mao before they were seized by 43 Assam Rifles stationed at Motbung.
Enforcement Cell of Excise Department which was constituted in accordance with the guidelines of the Election Commission of India also seized 700 litres of liquor from Imphal-Yairipok road.
These 700 litres of liquor were brewed in Andro.
Moreover, police personnel posted at Koirengei outpost seized and handed over 30 litres of liquor brewed in Sekmai to the Excise Department.
All these liquors were set ablaze today.

In addition, the Excise Department collected Rs 13,500 from the apprehended bootleggers and the same amount has been accrued to the Government exchequer, K Joykumar said.
He said that transportation of liquor is largely done by women and that all the liquors disposed off today were seized from women.
However, no women Constable could be stationed in Excise check-posts due to shortfalls in infrastructure.
Nevertheless, women Constables were present while conducting specific raids.
As transportation of liquor is largely done by women during night, Excise personnel face many limitations to intercept and seize liquor, conveyed the Assistant Commissioner.
With the elections approaching, the Enforcement Cell would be assigned greater tasks.
Quoting a report of the Election Commission of India, he said that liquor is the second item after distribution of cash in which candidates make maximum expenditure during elections.
