New Delhi, February 08 2014 :
Even as the dust of the protest for justice and safety for NE communities in the aftermath of Nido Tania death case hasn't settled down, NE youths were out on the street of South Delhi again today against the sexual assault and rape of a 14-year old girl from the State which reportedly oc-curred last night around 10 at Munirka, New Delhi.
The protesters were later joined by JNU students as well.
Mary (name changed), a native of Churachandpur district, who is living with her aunt in the locality was sexually assaulted and raped last night when she went out to get some groceries from a nearby shop.
She was forcibly dragged by a man and took to a room, assaulted and raped, said one of her relatives.
According to a girl's relative, the atrocities were com- mitted by the man in collusion with the son of the house owner.
Mary has been living with her aunt and family in Delhi for over a year now and was assisting her aunt who runs a small in house-shop selling agricultural products and other local items from Manipur.
ACP of Vasant Vihar police station Benita Mary Jaiter said that the victim came with her aunt to the Police station in the early hours today to file a complaint of rape.
"The victim is being counselled by NGOs and since the victim is a minor the Child Commission will also need to be involved," the ACP said.
"Medical test has been conducted and we have arrested one man in connection with the allegations," she said.
Later in the evening the ACP told The Sangai Express that the victim's state- ment has been recorded.
The Delhi Commission for Wo-men and Child Welfare has also intervened in the matter, the ACP informed.
On receiving information, Manipur Women Commission member June Rose Vaiphei, who also happened to be in Delhi for personal engagement also met the ACP and had personally appealed for speedy trail, strict punishment and appropriate measures for compensation to the victim.
Few days back, it may be recalled, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of DoNER came out with series of safety measures for NE people residing in the National Capital and other metro cities.
The MHA has formed a six-member panel to suggest safety measures for NE people in the wake of the killing of Nido Tania, a student from Arunachal Pradesh.
