RIMS performs free cardiac surgery

The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Unit, RIMS Imphal performed free paediatric cardiac surgery on five children in collaboration with Healing Little Hearts, UK.
The free surgeries were conducted at the North-East Regional Paediatric Cardiothoracic Centre, RIMS during a camp held from December 2 to 4, said a press note issued by the Media Cell of RIMS Imphal.
During the camp, the team including three specialists from Healing Little Hearts namely Dr Shyamadeep Borgohain, Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Dr Snehal M Kulkarni, Paediatric Cardiologist and Intensivist and Dr Shivaji Mali, Cardiac Anaesthetist from Fortis Hospital, Mumbai screened children with cardiac ailments and performed surgeries on the five children.
Out of the five, three had complex congenital heart diseases requiring open-heart surgery.
All treatment and investigations were provided free of cost to the patients, supported by the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) under the National Health Mission (NHM), Manipur.
It is worth noting that a series of free heart surgeries for children below 18 years was initiated in June 2024 at RIMS, Imphal in collaboration with renowned institutes worldwide.
So far, 12 patients with congenital heart disease have undergone successful surgeries.
RIMS Imphal has expressed gratitude to Dr Sanjiv Nichani, founder and lead Intensivist of Healing Little-Hearts, UK, the team from Healing Little Hearts, all the medical staff and volunteers as well as to RBSK NHM Manipur for funding the treatment and for setting up state-of-the-art Cardiothoracic Operation Theatre at RIMS.
