MTU campaign receives 5.8 lakh calls in support of ST for Meeteis

Over 5.8 lakh missed calls have been received in support of the "Missed Call" campaign launched by Meitei/Meetei Tribe Union (MTU) in its attempt to include the Meites/Meeteis in the ST list of the Indian Constitution to gain constitutional safeguard, informed MTU.
Addressing media persons at its Soibam Leikai office, here, on Tuesday, MTU secretary (Administration) Mutum Churamani said that MTU along with like-minded organisations including World Meetei Council (WMC) and Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) had launched the "Missed Call" campaign under the theme "Campaign for a better Manipur with equal rights" to include Meitei/Meetei in the schedule tribe list of the Indian constitution and gain constitutional safeguard, on November 20.The campaign will wind up on December 20.The campaign targeted to achieve at least 5 lakh supporters to provide evidence to the government of India about how many of the people of Manipur are in support of the inclusion of Meiteis/Meeteis in the ST list of the Indian Constitution.
As of 3 pm of Tuesday, a total of 5,85,831 people have extended support to the campaign by giving a missed call to the number provided.
While expressing gratitude to the people of the state for their unstinted support to the campaign, Churamani said that even though the target of the campaign has been achieved, the campaign will continue till December 20.Urging the public to provide more support by giving maximum missed calls, Churamani said that they firmly believes that the community will definitely achieve the goal.
Stating that MTU, WMC and KKL has been relentlessly working for the inclusion of Meeteis/Meiteis in the ST list for the welfare of the Meetei community.
No donations and fund drives from the public has been made with exception to distribution of coupons at RS 10 and 20 for creating mass awareness on the issue, WMC president Uritkhinbam Kunjo, MTU vice-president AK Ibomcha and KKL secretary Chingkheinganba (Ngamkheinganba) were also present during the press briefing.
Meanwhile, according to the Facebook update of KKL, the number of gupporters of the missed call campaign has reached 6,00,092 as of 4:30 pm Tuesday.
