Imphal, July 03 2013:
Even if there is a strong directive from the Supreme Court to all States to check use of tinted glass in vehicles, Manipur Police has failed to continue conducting drive against use of such opaque glass in vehicles.
Many high-end cars are using tinted glass right in the heart of Imphal City owing to the absence of a competent authority to check such violations.
According to the guidelines of Supreme Court, the States must ensure use of 70 percent transparent glass on windscreen and rear window while 50 percent transparent glass on side windows of vehicles as per Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1981, and also submit reports periodically.
On May 4, 2012 last year, the Supreme Court passed an order banning the use of opaque films on glass windows of vehicles.
As per strong directive of the Supreme Court, SP of Imphal West had issued an order prohibiting use of tinted glass in vehicles and conducted drive in some areas of Imphal East and Imphal West.
Police scrapped tinted film from some vehicles and also fined some owners in full public view.
However, they discontinued the drive after few days.
Today, one can see many vehicles with tinted glass moving around in front of the police personnel who are supposed to enforce this directive of the Supreme Court.
The officials of Police Department and Transport Department could face contempt of court if someone files a PIL against use of tinted glass in vehicles.
