Imphal, February 03 2022:
At least 54 candidates of the Congress party have taken a loyalty pledge to remain faithful to the people and the party after the Assembly election at different religious sites following the advice of the Congress high command, today.
The move comes after many MLAs who won the 2017 Assembly election on Congress ticket quit the party and defected to the BJP.
The Congress candidates led by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president MLA N Loken, former Chief Minister O Ibobi and AICC Manipur in charge Bhakta Chara Das took pledge of loyalty at Kangla, MBC Church at Chingmeirong, Lainingthou Sanamahi shrine at 1st Manipur Rifles complex, Masjid at Babupara and Govindajee Temple at Palace Compound.

Speaking to media persons, N Loken said that the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly is very important as it will decide the fate of the State.
Urging the people to recall the empty promises given by a certain party, N Loken urged all to support the Congress party in the ensuing election so as to install a good Government.
CLP leader O Ibobi said that certain politicians in the State have undermined the democratic ethos by frequently switching allegiance.
Saying that Anti Defection Law was passed to check such unethical conduct by the legislators, the former Chief Minister maintained that MLAs can defect to the parties of their preference but they must resign from their party first.
However, many MLAs in Manipur switching allegiance without resigning from their parties is not Constitutionally valid, he added.
Bhakta Charan Das claimed that BJP at the Centre has been consistently striving to break the Congress in different States using unethical methods.
Claiming that the BJP Government in Manipur was not formed by people's mandate, he added that the loyalty pledge was taken so as to uphold the trust of the people.
