Imphal, December 02 2019:
The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) has expressed deep concern over the degrading morality of young women in the State.
Speaking to media persons today, MSCW Chairperson Dr M Binota expressed keen desire for married women, unmarried women and men to uphold the social norms and laws of the land.
Some women do not feel any moral scruples even if they have eloped two/three times and some of them have even adopted elopement as a means of earning big money, Dr Binota said.
The commission has seen some women targeting and misleading young boys, she said.
Meira Paibis and local clubs should work to bring back immoral women to the right path.
But there are instances when some Meira Paibis and local clubs try to project the laws of the land in the wrong light.
It is illegal for any woman to harm the family of any unmarried man in her quest to get closer to the man, she said.
There is no legal restriction on any man or woman to go for second or third marriage after divorce.
If a married man/woman wishes to marry another partner while he/she is still living together his/her wife/husband, they must first divorce the current partner, said the MSWC Chairperson.
If a married man/woman marries a second partner while the first partner is still alive in the name of Keinya Katpa or Loukhatpa, the commission would treat such acts as defiance of social norms as well as the law.
As such, the Commission would initiate necessary legal action, Dr Binota said.
Th Ramani of the All Manipur Social Development and Reformation Samaj, L Memchoubi of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, S Momon of the All Manipur Tammi-Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup and S Sumati of the All Manipur Student Guardians Association were also present at the press meet.
They said that there are many parents who have no qualms in exchanging their daughters' dignity and modesty with money (izat dabi).
They appealed to all women not to forget that they are women and must uphold social norms and laws of the land.
