At least six persons were seriously hurt in a sudden outbreak of violence between the residents of two villages belonging to the Pumei community in the Paotheiku jungle, about 70 kilometres east of Senapati police Station on Tuesday afternoon, according to a delayed report.
According to a reliable source, the incident occurred while some villagers of Ngamjei Pumei village, along with at least three Meitei labourers, were working inside the Paotheiku jungle on Tuesday last.
The sources said that at around 2 pm, some hundred villagers of the neighboring Tingsong Pumei Village, including women, suddenly descended on the workers, and brutally assaulted them.
One R Shangtua, 35, of Ngamjei village, and the three Meitei laborers, identified as Mohen, Tomba and Debal, were among those seriously injured.
They were rescued by villagers of Ngamjei early yesterday morning, the sources said.
Two other villagers of Ngamjei, identifed as S Dashong and S Pani, who fled the area after the attack by the villagers of Tingsong, are reportedly still untraced.
