Imphal, June 01 2014:
Biodiver-sity, Ecology and Environment Network (BEE-Net) Manipur president Prof W Bishwanath has stated that Loktak lake is no longer a natural lake but an artificial water reservoir.
Prof Bishwanath was spe-aking at Green Peace compe- tition held at MU today under the aegis of BEE-Net Manipur and Centre for Guidance on Higher Study.
The competition was a test on awareness level of school students about environment.
It was held in the form of a written test where 100 questions related to environment and ecology issues were asked to the students.
Prof Bishwanath said that the competition was specifically organised to raise the awareness level of young students about the importance of conserving nature.
Noting that natural environment of Manipur has been severely degraded, Prof Bishwanath said that Loktak lake had its own natural course of life.
But today, the lake's natural cycle has disappeared.
It is now a big artificial water reservoir.
Since the Ithai Barrage was commissioned, the lake's natural water cycle was terminated thereby destroying breeding habitat of many indigenous fish species.
Prof Bishwanath further underscored the importance of restoring Loktak lake to its pristine self.
Altogether 300 students reading in classes IX to XII participated in the competition which was supported by Directorate of Environment.
Prizes of the competition held in two categories would be distributed on June 5 during World Environment Day observance.
