2 Amur Falcons satellite tagged

Two Amur Falcons were fitted with radio satellite transmitters by officials of State Forest Department and Wildlife Institute of India today in a bid to study their migratory route.
The two birds were named 'Puching', after the name of the village where Amur Falcon 'Manipur' was shot and killed by hunters, and 'Irang', the name of a river which flows nearby the said village.
The two tagged birds were blessed by the Pastor of Phuching village, Ph Akham, and then set free by Wildlife institute of India scientist Dr Suresh Kumar.

A Forest Department official mentioned that this is the first time scientists from the country have successfully satellite tagged and released the birds, without the help of foreign experts.
The two satellite tagged birds are all females, the source informed, adding that and the two birds, Puching and Irang weigh around 195 gms and 155 gms respectively.
They were tagged and released from Puching village ground during an event which was participated by the village chairman, locals and Forest Department experts, at around 7 am today.
The source further explained that three Amur Falcons were captured yesterday and they will be tagged and released tomorrow during an event in which the locals will also perform a traditional dance.
It may be mentioned that Tamenglong Forest Division DFO Arun RS and staff as well as WWII scientists have been camping at the village, the source added.
