JAC threatens stir over assault of driver, handyman

The 'JAC Against Inhuman Torture of Md Basir Ahmad and Salauddin at Phubala on October 28, 2024 ', has warned of launching intense agitation in case suitable actions are not initiated against the perpetrators by November 2.Reacting to alleged assault of truck driver Md Basir, and his assistant Salauddin by five armed persons on October 28 at Phubala, a public meeting was held at Kwakta Sevla Mina Bazar under Moirang assembly constituency on Tuesday with participation of representatives from civil society organisations, Meetei Pangal drivers and local religious leaders.
Addressing the media after the meeting, JAC convenor BM Iliyas Khan said-resolutions adopted at the meeting included demand for ceasing illegal tax collection along the Tiddim Road and deployment of adequate security personnel along the route.
He informed that copies of the resolutions would be submitted to the chief minister, Moirang MLA, Bishnupur DC and SP, DIG, and security advisor to government of Manipur.
Recalling the incident, Md Basir Ahmad said that while returning from Imphal with his handyman after unloading goods on October 28, their path was blocked by a car (Hyundai i20) around 9:30 pm at Phubala Awang Leikai.
The armed assailants approached him and enquired about his place of origin.
On being told that he is from Kwakta, the unknown armed persons started to launch assault before some meira paibis intervened and recorded the thrashing on their mobile phones, forcing the attackers to flee towards Imphal, Basir narrated while expressing gratitude to the women vigilantes.
The meeting was attended by representatives of AKYVO, AMPYA, AKCC, ANJUMAN, MPUVOK and AKADU.
