Imphal, August 02 2024:
Volunteers of Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) on Friday took out a rally, with Manipur Legislative Assembly as the purported final destination, demanding supply of cooking gas for the people and lowering the prices of goods, while condemning police brutality on journalists.
The volunteers began the rally around 3.30 pm Friday from Congress Bhawan, shouting various slogans.
However, they were intercepted by police near the PWD office where a brief stand-off ensued.
Later, the volunteers returned to Congress Bhawan after reaching an agreement with the police.
Speaking to media persons in this regard, MPYCC president N Popilal pointed out that it is the common people who are bearing the brunt of rising inflation but the ruling government remains unconcerned.
Since the BJP government came to power in the state, the people have been suffering immensely.
If the ruling government truly cares for the people, it would be best for the government to come up with a solution at the earliest, he stressed.
Condemning the assault on a journalist by an officer of Manipur Police on Thursday, he demanded strict punishment of the personnel involved and further said that the excessive use of force on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are only requesting to return home is not a sign of good governance.
The ruling government is all talk and no action.
It is a government who does not care about the tears of IDPs and will see to the disintegration of Manipur.
One can only wonder why it is adamant on playing narrow-minded politics but blames the Congress upon any criticism.
No one wants or likes the ruling government, he said, while urging all concerned to stop playing the blame game.
During the protest, the volunteers shouted slogans such as "Provide cooking gas to the people", "Lower prices of items", "We condemn assault on media", "Down, Down BJP government", "We condemn shooting at people", "Lower gas prices", "We condemn attack on students", "CM's actions are condemnable", "Bring peace and tranquillity to the state", and "We condemn traumatising the students" .
