Training on 'Child Centric Disaster Risk Reduction' begins

A three-day online training programme on 'Child Centric Disaster Risk Reduction' organised by Manipur University (MU) Teacher Education Department in collaboration with National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) Child Centric Disaster Risk Reduction Centre, began from Wednesday.
The inaugural function of the training was attended by MU vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra, registrar Prof W Chandbabu, programme co-ordinator Dr Koijam Sobita, representatives of NIDM's Centre Dr Balu I, Ranjan Kumar, MS Nazia Sheikh along with external experts, teachers and students of MU, colleges, schools, Social Welfare Department officials, NSS volunteers and NGOs.
Speaking in connection with the programme, Prof Lokendra noted that disasters or any kind of crisis affect children the most and expressed confidence that the training will help the government and public in taking up measures for protecting children during the time of disaster.
On the other hand, Prof W Chandbabu recalled the 1999 Assam flood and mentioned that the training programme will help in forming guidelines for protecting children during a disaster or calamity while Dr K Sobita noted that whatever trauma a person goes during his childhood can very much affect the person throughout his/ her life.
During disaster, children undergo physical, mental, social and psychological stress including starvation, loss of family members and fight for survival.
This may cause anxiety, depression and can impact the overall development of children.
In such a situation, it is the responsibility of all to protect and care for the children who are the future of the society, she further observed.
Later, external experts, Dolphi Raman spoke on 'Do's and Don'ts on Covid-19' and Ranjan Kumar on 'Basic Concepts of Disaster Risk Management'.
The training programme, which aims to create awareness on impact on children during time of disaster or emergency crisis along with providing training on precautionary measures with regard to protection of children, is being participated by 300 people.
