Imphal, February 08 2024:
Meetei Council, Moreh and Kangleipak Kanba Lup have welcomed the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah to construct border fence along the entire 1,648 km Indo-Myanmar border.
In separate releases, Meetei Council and Kangleipak Kanba Lup maintained that fencing the porous border will help check cross border smuggling of drugs and arms, illegal influx of Myanmarese nationals into India and prevent movement of anti-social elements between India and Myanmar.
It is also a welcome move for the state government as the present crisis is largely due to influx of illegal Myanmarese nationals, the bodies opined while pointing out failure to address the border issue will only deepen the present crisis.
They also demanded to start construction of border fencing at the earliest by expediting the formal process.
Moreover, a proper and meticulous survey should be conducted so that no portion of the land of Manipur is lost, the releases added.
Meanwhile, KKL commended the decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) .
