Imphal, July 07 2022:
The Zeme Naga Council Manipur (ZNCM) has urged the state government to declare 2022 a natural disaster year in view of natural calamities wreaking havoc in the state, especially in the hilly areas including the Makhuam village landslide.
A release by Council's general secretary L Etalakpe said that incessant rainfall affected other districts as well with flooding and landslides and connectivity snapped in many hill areas consequently creating serious problem to the common people.
While pointing out that the hill people mainly depend on jhum and terrace farming for food-grain adequacy, it stated that due to disruption caused to agricultural activities on account of the natural calamities there is apprehension of a famine-like situation if the state government does not take up appropriate measures before it is too late.
The Council also suggested that the state government approach the centre and declare 2022 as a disaster year so that the needy and affected people may be saved and compensated by the government.
