Imphal, February 01 2023:
Chief minister N Biren Singh has extended his greeting to the people of Manipur on the occasion of the World Wetlands Day which is observed every year on February 2 to highlight the value of wetlands.
In his message, CM Biren said that the observance marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971, which now has a global membership of 172 countries including India.
N Biren reminded that wetlands deliver survival needs for humans, from providing food and livelihoods, sustaining biodiversity and storing carbon, recreation and inspiration.
While pointing out that Loktak Lake is an ecological marvel of Manipur which is very important for the state's ecosystem and economy, Biren said the state government has been taking up various initiatives to preserve and protect the lake.
"Though the government is coming up with a master plan to rejuvenate the Loktak Lake with a long-term approach, however, the onus of saving wetlands lies on our collective shoulders and not just with government," Biren stressed.
He also called upon everyone to join hands to save the wetlands.
