PHED contract staffers draw Govt attention

Imphal, May 20 2021:
Contract staff members of Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), who are assigned duties as frontline workers in fighting the current COVID-19 pandemic, have urged government to look into inconveniences they are encountering while executing duties.
Contract assistant engine operators and technical ju-galis of the department were recruited through a DPC conducted after the government issued a notification in 2016 and engagement period of these staff was extended from time to time.
Assistant engine operators get Rs 6090 as monthly salary while technical jugalis get Rs 5840 and through these meagre salaries they have been managing their families for a long time, informed some contract staff of the department.
According to the staff, contract staff of the department are being utilised just like regular staff amidst COVID-19 pandemic and one contract staff had even succumbed to the virus.
They also said that government is doing nothing to improve condition of contract staff despite facing numerous difficulties.
