Imphal, August 09 2022:
PHE minister Leis hangthem Susindro has stated that the government has taken up steps to solve flooding of the runway of Imphal International Airport and surrounding areas, which has affected flight services, adding that the problem will be resolved within two days.
On Tuesday, minister Susindro accompanied by Water Resource minister Awangbow Newmai, Moirang MLA T Shanti, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA S Kebi, Airports Authority of India (AAI) engineer and department officials inspected the works taken up by AAI to drain away flood water from the inundated runway and the existing condition of tributaries of Waisel and Nambul river under Naoriya Pakhanglakpa constituency, where the flood water is to be drained off.
Speaking on the occasion, Susindro informed that work of cleaning the drainage system has been taken up after receiving reports of flight services being affected due to the inundated runway.
This is the fourth inspection carried out by the government, and the runway will be strengthened once the flood water is drained away.
The level between the water and the runway will have a difference of 3 ft and the canal currently being dug will assist in future drainage.
The work inside the airport is being delayed on AAI's part due to continuation of flight services.
However, the work taken up by the government outside the airport is almost completed.
Both works will be completed within two days, he added.
Susindro then informed that the dredging of Waisel Maril will soon be taken up and if successful, will prevent any further blockage.
Meanwhile, Water Resource minister Awangbow stated that after receiving reports of the runway being inundated after the rain, the ministers/MLAs team had taken up the work of digging up a canal two weeks ago, as per the CM's instruction.
The work inside the airport is being done by AAI, while the work outside the airport is being jointly taken up by Water Resource and PHED.
The inspection on Tuesday was carried out due to delay on AAI's part, he added.
