While acknowledging unbearable monetary demands placed against educational institutes and also confiding that it is not possible to deploy security teams in every institution, education minister Th Basanta Kumar has assured that the education department will seek assistance of the home department in the form of deploying patrol teams around schools and colleges to nab the extortionists.
Responding to a calling attention motion moved by opposition member Th Lokeshwar on the demand for making education a disturbance free zone in Thursday's session of the assembly, Basanta termed the act of extorting money from educational institutes as unfortunate.
It has become common knowledge that some anti-social elements are taking advantage of the current crisis and trying to extort money from not only those in education sector but also from other sectors.
It is disheartening to see students and teachers coming out on the streets to protest, he said and appealed to all concerned to refrain from causing disturbances to educational institutes.
He told the House that the government, under the leadership of the CM, is making all efforts to maintain law and order in the state along with confiding about government formulating long term plans to improve education sector in the state.
While moving the motion, MLA Th Lokeshwar highlighted widespread protests being launched by students and teachers against disturbances caused to the education sector.
Highlighting importance of education in the society, he questioned the responsibility of the government if it could not control the situation and also urged the government to use any means to stop such illegal activities.
The MLA further appealed to the teachers to come out and disclose everything to the authority instead of engaging students to organise protest on their behalf.
He also drew attention of the chief minister, who is also the home minister, to resolve the matter at the earliest and save the students from facing such tense situation.
Stating that children of those involved in such extortion activities might also be studying in one of the educational institutes, he urged to all concerned to rethink their acts.
