Meitei Pangals flee Kwakta as gunfight continues

Over 2000 people from the Meitei Pangal community were forced to flee their homes in Kwakta area, Bishnupur district after heavy gunfight occurred between Kuki militants, and state forces and village volunteers in the area from 2 pm Sunday.
According to a report, after three people including a father-son duo asleep in their house at Kwakta Lamkhai Ward no.8 were brutally murdered by Kuki militants on Saturday, heavy gunfight broke out between state forces and Kuki militants.
On Sunday around 2 pm, Kuki militants began firing at the villages in the valley but were retaliated by state forces and village volunteers in the area.
The gunfight lasted for about half-an-hour.
However, owing to the intermittent gunfights which began on Saturday after midnight, over 2000 Meitei Pangal residing in the area were forced to flee towards Kwakta Bazar and seek refuge in safer locations.
At about 4pm, the Kuki militants resumed attacking Kwakta and Phougakchao Ikhai Awang Leikai areas.
The state security forces and village volunteers retaliated and the heavy gunfight continued till 8pm.There is no report of any casualty on either side.
