Imphal, August 02 2024:
Mid-Day Meal Workers' Union, Manipur has urged the government to take a decision for hiking honorarium of mid-day meal workers in the ongoing Assembly session.
Addressing media persons at Irabot Bhawan, here, on Thursday, Union convenor Pukhrambam Prabhasini highlighted the plight of midday meal workers who prepare meal for students under the Mid-Day Meal/Pradhan Mantri Poshan Scheme.
Informing that these workers receive monthly allowance of only Rs 1000, equivalent to about Rs 30 per day, she said such meagre payment has left them in a state of dilemma due to high cost of living induced by unprecedented hike in prices of essential items.
The convenor also alleged apathy by the government authorities to mid-day meal workers, taking into account of the fact that honorarium of Anganwadi workers has been increased and mid-day meal workers in other states are entitled to over Rs 10,000 per month through supplementation from shares of the state concerned to the minimum wage.
Moreover, in Manipur, even the minuscule honorarium of midday workers is not paid in time, Prabhasini maintained and demanded that service of mid-day meal workers be regularized and their plight discussed in the assembly to adopt a House resolution for hiking their entitlement.
If these demands are not honoured intense agitation will be launched, she cautioned.
