Five arrested by NIA sent to jail

Imphal, January 25 2023:
The five people, who were arrested by National Investigation Agency (NIA) during raids conducted earlier this month in Moreh, have been remanded in judicial custody till February 8 by the special judge (NIA) Manipur on Wednesday.
The arrested people are Deepak Sharma alias Khon-mong (38) of Tamu, Myanmar; Surak Jaiswal (33) of Moreh Morning Bazar, San-tosh Gupta (44) of Moreh Cosmopolitan building (3rd floor), Sonar Napolean Bahadur (39) of Moreh Khunou Leikai, and Saikhom Bruce Meetei (38) of Moreh Khunou Leikai.
As per submission of the NIA counsel, the accused people operated different bank accounts which are used for depositing money extorted from the general public.
People of the border town are facing immense pressure from UG groups and the accused people transfer the extorted money to the UG groups.
NIA is collecting materials of different types from the accused and it would require further examination to find out the trail of money.
The agency needs them in custody to prevent any possible destruction of evidences, the counsel submitted while praying for further remand.
Out of the five,,Sonar Napolean Bahadur applied for bail.
His counsel submitted that he is a medicine distributor and runs a wholesale and distributor agency called M/s AM Medicos.
He is a small time trader and has no relation with any UG group.
They amount seized by NIA is his trade fund, which he uses for buying medicine in bulk.
After hearing both sides, the special judge (NIA) remanded all five in judicial remand till February 5 .
