Many stress need for enhancing profile of Manipuri language

Though Manipuri Language has been included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution since 1992, it is not the time to rejoice as there are many more to do for promoting the language, said Keishamthong MLA L Jayantakumar.
The former minister chaired the 30th Manipuri Language Day observance organised by Manipuri Language Day State Level Celebration Committee, which is formed by representatives from 15 organisations, at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, here on Friday.
Former minister Tongbram Mangibabu and renowned writer Aribam Kumar Sharma also shared the dais with the MLA, who is also the chairman of the celebration committee.
Speaking at the commemorative event, MLA Jayantakumar pointed out that the immediate goal for Manipuri language is to get the status of classical language and as such it entails united efforts from all sections of the society.
Manipuri language has all the characteristics of a classical language and the only thing that is needed is to bring up the matter to the appropriate authority with the right documentation and recommendation.
It should be the bounden duty of the present generation and a gift to the future generation, he said.
In his address, ex-minister T Mangibabu said that people often use Fnglish language in organising event and observance but preference for foreign language is not a good sign for Manipuri Ian guage as it will be only abet in diluting widespread usage and significance of Manipuri language.
He thus, urged the public to use Manipuri language as far as possible.
Kumar Sharma, who also spoke on the occasion, observed that there are numerous people who love and work for promoting Manipuri language and it is because of their efforts that Manipuri language had been enlisted in the 8th Schedule of the Constitutions.
A joint effort and movement is the need of the hour to get the status of classical language, he said.
Manipur University of Culture vice chancellor professor Gunindro, Saratchand Thiyam, Sagolsem Tijendra, Makhonmani Mongsaba and Wareppa Naba spoke on the requirements to get the classical language status.
They also thanked the government for adopting late B Jayantakumar Sharma's 'Sana Leibak Manipur' as the state song.
