Need for serious dig to fix development lag stressed

Highlighting disparity in development of Manipur and rest of the country, Manipur University vice-chancellor Prof N Lokendra stressed the need for an in-depth study of the root problems and challenges hindering the state s growth.
He made these remarks during the inaugural session of a two-day national seminar on "Politics and Development Challenges: Emerging Issues in Northeast India" held on Thursday at the university's court hall.
Jointly organised by Manipur University department of political science, and United College, Chandel, the seminar aims to explore pressing issues affecting the northeast region and deliberate on potential solutions to address its socio-political and developmental challenges.
Speaking as the chief guest, Prof Lokendra underscored that Northeast India is significantly influenced by developments in Southeast Asian countries and must remain vigilant about the current affairs in its neighbours.
"The region's strategic importance has been attracting global attention, presenting an opportunity to draw investments for all-round development," he said.
Prof Lokendra called for a proactive role from academicians in steering the region toward progress.
He emphasised the importance of their research, publications, and public statements in shaping the socio-economic trajectory of the region.
"Academicians must play a pivotal role in initiating changes that contribute to the growth, prosperity, and welfare of the northeast, " he added.
The inaugural function was presided over by the head of the department of political science Prof Nameirakpam Bijen Meetei, while the dean of the school of social sciences, Prof Th Purnima, attended as the guest of honour.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof Akhil Ranjan Dutta of department of political science, Gauhati University.
A souvenir commemorating the seminar was released on the occasion.
