Imphal, May 15 2025: The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) successfully organised a 1-day sensitization programme on "Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013" at SIRD Hall, RD & PR Directorate, Porompat yesterday.

The event was graced by dignitaries, including Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, Chairperson, MSCW; Umananda Singh, Director, RD & PR, Manipur; W Phajatombi Devi, Member Secretary, MSCW & Additional Director (IPR), Manipur; MSCW Members Chuongsin Koireng, Lourembam Dayabati Devi and SK Sophia Moyon.

Delivering the welcome address, W Phajatombi Devi stated that the programme was part of MSCW's ongoing campaign to spread awareness on women's safety at workplaces.

She explained that instances of sexual harassment, though often underreported, occur in various office settings and must be addressed proactively.

She highlighted the importance of Internal Committees, formed under the directive of the Supreme Court, and explained that each Internal Committee functions in accordance with the guidelines laid down in the 2013 Act to handle complaints in a timely and sensitive manner.

Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang elaborated on the Commission's critical role since its establishment in 2006.She said that MSCW serves as a platform for women to raise concerns relating to domestic violence, workplace harassment, discrimination, and other forms of harassment.

Reiterating that the Commission provides a safe and confidential space for women to file complaints & seek justice, she urged women to come forward without hesitation and assured that the Commission is committed to providing necessary counselling and legal support.

She also spoke about the Commission's efforts in resolving family disputes, noting that broken families can deeply impact children's emotional well-being.

She remarked that a workplace is like a second home, and when issues such as a senior harassing a junior arise, it creates a hostile environment.

"In such situations, the affected employee may feel unsafe, demotivated, and unwilling to attend or perform effectively at work", added Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang.

Ksh Umananda Singh mentioned that while cases of sexual harassment may not be as frequently reported in Manipur, the issue remains widespread across India.

He noted that victims often refrain from speaking out due to internalised stigma or fear of societal judgment.

Furthermore, the Director urged all the staff to be empathetic, informed, and supportive in addressing such issues and creating safer workspaces.

Later, a technical session on the "Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013" was conducted by Thiyam Rajkishore, Advocate.
