Kakching, November 07 2024:
Thoubal Forest Division in association with People for Nature, Thoubal district carried out a publicity campaign to sensitise public on the harmful impacts of burning paddy straws and dissuade them from scattering or burning straws after harvesting/threshing.
The campaign held across the district focused on the negative impacts of burning straws on the environment and natural ecosystem, with the participants pleading the public to refrain from scattering straws on the roads, streets, plants, or inside rivers and canals often by threshing machines.
Earlier on Monday, Joint Coordination Committee on Wildlife and Biodiversity (JCCWB) made a similar appeal to the public amidst the peak harvesting season.
It also warned of legal actions against anyone found indulging in activities detrimental to the environment.
The committee observed that straws ejected by threshing machines often cover new plants endangering the plants.
The committee appealed to the public to report such incidents to its Nature Vanguard Force through the helpline numbers 94362 27632, or 69090 17286 .
