Imphal, February 01 2023:
Nupeelal Memorial Association Manipur, steering committee secretary Longjamba Meetei Netaji has called for preserving the true history of Nupeelal by producing authentic documents and records instead of indulging in argument and counter argument in media.
Addressing a press meet at its Tera Keithel office premises, here, on Wednesday, Netaji said that late freedom fighter L Rajani, who was honoured with Tamrapatra Award in 1973, published her account on Nupeelal 1939'as audio record and book.
The book was released during the Nupeelal observance of 1980 by the then chief minister Rishang Keishing.
'In the late 90s, the association invited organisations and individuals through local dailies to bring out documents or records from all communities to make a list of participants of the Nupeelal.
However, no claim was received from any Muslim organisation or individuals at that time.
It was unfortunate that United Manipur Muslim Women's Development Organisation (UMMWDO) made misleading claim to the public during the death anniversary of freedom 'fighter L Rajani held on January 24 this year.
No leaders of Nupeelal Memorial Association, Manipur made any claim rejecting participation of Muslim women in the movement, Netaji clarified.
On the other hand, the association looked for documents and historical records among historians, state archives, administrative reports, gazette, etc., after UMMWDO filed an application for inclusion of names of 30 Muslim women among the participants of the movement.
However, the association could not find any such documents.
Nevertheless, the association is extending invitation to UMMWDO or any organisation to bring out their records to maintain a true record of the historic incident in the interest of future generations to come, Netaji said.
