Imphal, February 24 2024:
Considering the hardships faced by the people of the state following the crisis which has been lingering on for nearly 10 months now, Meetei/Meitei Tribe Union (MTU) has urged the government to take a decision to waiving loans of the people during the upcoming assembly session and press the central government for the same.
Addressing media persons at its Wangkhei Khunnou office, here, on Saturday, MTU president Mutum Churamani pointed out that India had in the past provided necessary help to other countries during the time of natural calamities.
Even during the corona virus outbreak, the government of India had waived the loans of the people.
Therefore, it is quite certain that the central government would consider waiving the loans of the people of Manipur who are victims of the crisis.
He further pointed out that many entrepreneurs who were not only providing self-employment but also had given employment opportunities to many people, are now facing serious problems due to the present crisis.
As their businesses have failed, the employees under them (entrepreneurs) are also facing problems beyond their imagination.
Under such a condition, when the people of the state are suffering due to the prolonged crisis, it is very unfortunate that bank officials are constant ly worrying them (people) by asking to repay the loans and threatening to take their properties if the loans are not repaid.
He also appealed to the authority concerned not to deduct the taxes from the government employees until the crisis is over.
Many entrepreneurs, who were also present during the press meet, said that their shops and business establishments have been burnt down during the crisis and they are taking shelter in the relief camps.
However, despite the hardships faced by them, the banks continue to give them pressure and at times they even felt like committing suicide.
If at all they commit suicide, they will leave a suicide note informing that the suicide has been committed due to heavy pressure given by bank officials.
