Adapt to global technological changes: MU VC

Against the backdrop of global transformation and technological advancements, Manipur University vice-chancellor Prof N Lokendra urged students and academicians to adapt and update their skills to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving landscape.
Prof Lokendra was speaking at the inauguration of a six-day workshop on "Data Analysis Using Excel and SPSS", organised by the MU, department of statistics, as part of its third series of one-week workshops.
The workshop, which began on Thursday at the conference hall of the university's Department of Commerce seeks to equip participants with practical knowledge of data analysis tools and techniques, emphasising the significance of software such as Excel and SPSS in modern research and analytics.
In his address as the chief guest, Prof Lokendra highlighted the legacy of late Prof BM Singh, a statistician whose contributions played a pivotal role in elevating the status of the department of statistics at Manipur University.
"Till today, the department continues to progress through the dedicated efforts of its faculty members," he remarked.
Prof Lokendra reflected on the drastic changes in accessing and utilising data over the years.
He noted that while libraries were once essential for data collection, smartphones and the internet now provide wide range of readily available information.
However, he stressed that understanding and analysing data to extract meaningful insights and applying the same effectively entails specific skills.
Drawing attention to the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI), Prof Lokendra pointed out that AI is being integrated into diverse fields, from creating presentations to drafting thesis.
He urged the academic community to embrace such advancements, highlighting that workshops like this one are vital steps in adopting new technologies.
"This workshop aims to enable students to effectively analyse data using Excel and SPSS, thereby preparing them for the challenges posed by these technological changes," he added.
The inaugural session included floral tributes to late Prof BM Singh, honouring his contributions to the field of statistics.
The event was also attended by MU school of mathematical and physical sciences dean Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam, department of statistics head Prof Salam Opendra, and workshop convenor Dr Salam Shantikumar as presidium members.
