NCM chief assures to consider ST demand

Imphal, September 18 2024: Representatives of Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MTU) met with National Commission for Minorities chairman Iqbal Singh Lalpura, on Wednesday to submit a memorandum requesting inclusion of the Meetei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list of the Indian Constitution.

The MTU delegation included advisor Amrik Singh Pahwa, secretary (administration) Mutum Churamani, joint secretary Yumnam Rajeshwor and member Bimol.

After their meeting, Churamani expressed optimism about inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list.

During the 25-minute meeting, Iqbal Lalpura acknowledged the legitimacy of their demand and called his secretary to initiate the necessary processes.

He also assured the representatives that flight prices would be reduced by 50 percent to address risk faced by the Meeteis in travelling along the national highways amid the unrest situation.

Iqbal also advised the MTU representatives to submit an application on the matter.
